For The Love Of Books

Morni', all,....read 'The Shack', Hmmmmm...... There were some parts of it that I took (or read) with a grain of salt. But for the most part it was really thought provoking and made me want to have a deeper relationship with God. He and only He can save the souls of man.......He gives the grace our hearts hunger for. He is the One that I praise! Amen and Amen! RIC

Sorry, I haven't been on for a while. Haven't read "My Sister's Keeper" or "The Last Dragon" but will put them on my (very long) list. I don't read much fantasy but I know it's popular.

A really good children's book that I've read lately is The Penderwicks by Jeanne Birdsall and the sequel: The Penderwicks on Gardam Street. It's a tale of four sisters, their widowed dad, and their dog. It's a modern day setting but the flavor of the book is somewhat old fashioned with a lot of character interaction between neighbors, zany everyday adventures and "dates" for dad arranged by the girls.

I also read Thirteen Little Blue Envelopes by Maureen Johnson. It's a Young Adult book about a girl that receives 13 blue envelopes from her aunt that reveal clues in each one. She travels where the clues indicate, hoping to know her aunt better and find out about herself in the process.

for mom5boys: I read Jodi Picoult's My Sister's Keeper. It was powerful.

Alos I like Karen Kings bury's Redemption series and the ones that follow about the rest of the family are wonderful, too. (I find myself really getting into the characters....) I also like Tracie Peterson. She wrote an awesome series about Montana.... I also like Lori Wick. Lori Copeland,Angela Hunt, Kristen Heitzman,Wanda Brunstetter, Beverly Lewis,Kim Vogel Sawyer......just to name a few. i usually get on the list at the library but they are so slow I tend to go buy the durn books. I guess I want to read the next book as soon as I am done with the last one!(Or the first in the series, as it were). well. done rambling here also. Love ya all!

I have not heard of The Shack and plan to look for it right away after your recommendation. I love to read as well.  I read to escape but also to step into other worlds.  I guess it is a way to learn by experience without having to physically experience things. I like thought provoking books.  Have you read Jodi Piccoult's My Sister's Keeper.  Interesting thoughts for today.  One Christian book that really has touched me is Safely Home by Randy Alcorn.  I read it this summer and I can't stop thinking about it.  Did you read the children's book The Last Dragon?  I can't remember the author but I bought it for my school at the IRA conference last spring.  I will try to return to this site at times to find out other recommended books. Hey I'm happy to join this group! I'm a children's librarian and I have been trying to catch up on reading lots of different material.

I do read a lot of eclectic things--I just finished "The Shack" by William P. Young. All I can say is WOWeee. . .it's unbelievable. I've never read anything like it. I would say it's a book for believers, non-believers, and anyone who has wondered where God has been at difficult moments in their life. No, it's not a children's book.

I would also imagine this will be the most talked about book in Christian circles in a very long time. It came out last year.

Hi All!  I just finished reading "A Time to Mend" by Sally John and Gary Smalley.  It's a wonderful read.  Although it is fiction, it gives a very real account of things that make the marriage road rough and bumpy at times.  I highly recommend it.  :) RIC

I've read some of Stormie Omartian's books, and they are absolutely wonderful!    The Power of a Praying Wife is probably my favorite.

My favorite fiction authors are Karen Kingsbury, Francine Rivers, and Tracie Peterson.  Reading is my way to unwind and destress.  I work in healthcare and have an autistic child so sometimes I just need an escape.

HI, just got back to looking at your comment.  Stormie Omartian has written several books and this one has really been a bonus for me and my son as we go through some dark times right now.  Reading a chapter a day and really concentrating on the message has been great.  There are also Bible verses with each chapter as well as a prayer for the chapter.  

It basically helps you become more confident when God calls you beyond your comfort zone by taking His hand and letting Him guide you.

Some of her other books are The Power of Praying Together, The Power of a Praying Wife/Husband/Parent and several others.  I hope you get a chance to check some of them out.

My love of reading is a source of comfort and peace for me.  I love books by Christian authors that help me grow in my walk with God (currently I'm reading "Just Enough Light for the Step I'm On by Stormie Omartian) and a novel.

I enjoy novels by Christian authors and especially a good mystery, but I do read other books than mystery stories.  A little love and romance is always a fun mix with the mystery too.
